HOW TO DYE A FELT TOP HAT…WITHOUT ANY EXPERIENCE OR PROPER EQUIPMENT
Step 1. Be brave and patient. This is a friends much loved and expensive hat so naturally I was bricking it a little. Have plenty of clear space to work in, lay bin liners down, do whatever you need to do…this gets pretty messy!
Step 2. Work out how much dye and salt you need - I used 60g of each and a litre of water. I didn’t use all of it by the end but its handy to have spare to go back to if you want to do a couple of coats. Mix it all together.
Step 3. Pour dye into spray container and start spritzing. I started with the brim, you want to spray an even consistency. If the felt gets too sodden in one place then it can start to distort the hat.
Step 4. Dry with a hairdryer, keep rotating the hat so it dries evenly and your not heating one area up too quickly - as it might distort hat.
Step 5. Check the colour and repeat the process if necessary. My first go was a bit patchy so I did this three times tonight to get a deeper more even colour.
For the top of the top hat where the hat dips a little in the middle, get rid of any excess dye that gathers here, little pools of dye are not our friends. I’m going to make a new band and decoration for this hat so I’ll upload a finished photo later.
